Native Seed Coating | Leaders in Seed Innovation

BioBank Seed is continually researching and developing native seed coating techniques to deal with a diverse range of native seeds for varying Australian conditions, tailoring the best solution for any project.
What is Seed Coating?
Seed coating consists of applying constituents to the surface of the seed, and it is mainly used to modify the physical properties and deliver active ingredients. Seed coating is already used actively in agriculture. BioBank Seed has been researching and testing seed coating techniques to various native seeds for ecological restoration. The basic seed coating is inert, but active ingredients can be added.

What are the Benefits?
Some seeds have characteristics that make them difficult to use practically. The primary reason for coating native seed is to create a uniform product that is easier to use. Being easier to use, you have more control of the sowing rate, leading to less waste and less seed needed. This is important since native seed is a limited natural resource and needs to be used sustainably.
The benefits of native seed coating include:
- Bulking up small seeds
- Ideal for hard to handle native grasses, eucalypts and other native seeds.
- Increased flowability for difficult to disperse seed
- Uses less seed
- Adding biota to aid in seedling establishment
- Protects fragile seed
- Delays germination until sufficient moisture is available
- Saves money by using less seed & yielding better results
